Zucchini (General Mathenge Road)

We know what you’re thinking. Isn’t Zucchini a greengrocer?

Known for its fresh juice and upmarket produce e, this chain of vegetable-vendors is a recognizable fixture of the city’s shopping scene. But its General Mathenge Road branch offers something special: a charming dine-in patio space and scrumptious range of healthy food options that make this supermarket-cum-cafe a hidden gem for the lunching public.

Healthy, nutritious, and diverse, the menu options here are also pocket-friendly, with sandwiches, wraps, and salads that easily match Art Caffe and Java House for quality, while beating them comfortably in the price department.

What to Eat

Feeling brunch-y? Substantial breakfast plates ranging from pancakes (510 KSH) to avo toast (600 KSH) abound, while Zucchini’s pan-roasted shakshuka (500 KSH) earns a special mention for size, flavor, and attention to detail.

Diners chasing a more filling fix won’t be disappointed. A genuine, wood-fired oven at the far end of the space churns out a steady stream of hand-crafted pizzas (750-820 KSH) that pull a loyal fanbase of carry-out customers from throughout this leafy, Westgate-adjacent neighborhood. Come any day of the week between 4 pm-7:30 pm for an unbeatable takeaway offer (two large pizzas for 1,000 KSH).

The falafel

Not to be overlooked are the house-made falafel, which emerges hot, crispy, and fragrant from the cafe’s open kitchen. Have them in a veggie-packed pita sandwich (390 KSH) or with hummus and a salad (450 KSH).

The Bakery

Keeping true to the Zucchini name, the branch also sports a top-of-the-line bakery and grocery, making it the perfect spot to pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread (from 75 KSH) or healthy, gourmet party-pleasers like fresh-squeezed juice, marinated olives, or ready-to-eat, frozen, Indian-style curries.

The Wifi

The only thing stopping this from becoming the next Mecca for the laptop-toting work-from-home crowd? Spotty wifi. Despite sporting ample charging points, the pleasant patio’s internet service remains consistently unreliable.

Until that’s fixed, airtime-conscious internet-commuters may need to look elsewhere to find their pop-up office space, but we at ThisNairobi will keep coming back to General Mathenge Road for the Grade A vibes and vittles.
